In contrast, Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF) is an electronic digital canvas. It records absolute coordinate positioning (X, Y) for every glyph and vector shape. A PDF rendered on a Linux server, an iPhone, or a Windows desktop will look byte-for-byte identical.

When to Always Use PDF

PDF is the mandatory standard whenever a document has reached its final form and must be distributed without alteration.

Word is unmatched during the collaborative draft stage. If multiple stakeholders need to contribute tracked changes, leave comment balloons, or restructure entire paragraphs, editing a Word file is vastly more productive than manipulating static PDF object streams.
